ICE USA is a Cool Time in Orlando

Guardian Highlighted at ICE

ICE USA Features PSC Guardian Web Profiler

ICE USA featured Process Sensors Guardian Cross Direction Web Profile System.  This was the second USA ICE show and will be followed by ICE Asia in 2014.  ICE represents the International Converting Exhibit and is gaining worldwide traction.  We hope to continue our relationship with ICE and AIMCAL to promote our valued converting measurement tools for moisture, coat weigtht and film thickness on paper, film, foil and metal.

MCT360 Near Infrared Transmitter for Moisture, Coat Weight, Film and Hot Melt Thickness

paper moisture transmitter

MCT360 Non-Contact NIR Moisture and Coat Weight Analyzer

The MCT360 NIR transmitter is fast, accurate and reliable.  The MCT can measure moisture, coat weight or film and hot melt thickness to improve process control.  Moisture applications include dryer inlet, exit and re-moisturizing stations.  Moisture control helps maintain flatness and eliminate edge curl.  Wet end water based coat weight measurement and dry end hydrocarbon deposition are easy to make with the MCT360.

Coupled with the Guardian Cross Direction Web Profile System the display helps operators maintain a uniform coating across the web.  Analog outputs allow automatice process control and digital outputs allow roll archiving for customer Quality Assurance.  Please contact us 508.473-9901 to discuss your application today!

International Converting Exhibitions ICE In Munich & Orlando

Process Sensors invites you to join us at ICE Europe and ICE USA in Munich and Orlando. The International Converting Exhibitions offer us an opportunity to thank our customers and meet with new colleagues. ICE Europe is in Munich, Germany and we will be located in Hall A5, Stand 754 March 19-21. ICE USA is in Orlando, Florida and we will be in Booth 967.

Cross Directional Control of Hot Melt Die Bolt Coating NIR Transmitter Coat Weight Measurement

High viscosity hot melt Pressure Sensitive Adhesives (PSA) are often applied to substrates via die bolt coaters in tape manufacturing. The viscous liquid flows through the die slot onto paper, film, or other substrate. The slot gap width is adjusted by die bolts manually (screw extrusion) or via pump pressure. The die bolt zones are located across the web to minimize interactions, streaks, and voids. Near Infrared (NIR) transmitters measure the hydrocarbon absorption of the PSA and display the measurement in g/m2, mils, or other suitable engineering units. Traversing the web (typically 8 ” - 80″) with the NIR sensor allows a zoned web profile to be displayed for manual adjustments at start up, or the zoned outputs can be used for automatic control. It is important that the web profile zones correspond to the die bolts across the web to maintain a uniform coating profile. Die width, die bolt spacing, scan speed across the web, and web speed need to be considered when setting up the cross directional NIR web profile measurement system. Imperfections in die gap settings contribute to non-uniform coating profiles. Die gaps are initially set at their previously known optimal settings. The profile system zoned output is typically a moving average of the two previous scans updated at the end of each subsequent scan. The scan speed and damping (time constant) are set to provide a stable measurement across the web. The PLC controller allows for proportional band (gain), rate, and reset rate adjustments for die bolt actuator control that maintains a uniform profile as web speeds change in automatic systems. Implementation of a NIR Cross Directional Web Profile Measurement System greatly improves quality control and start up time while reducing scrap.

Water Based Coat Weight Measurement Made Easy With Guardian Cross Direction Web Profile System

Guardian Cross Direction Web Profile System Makes Coat Weight Measurement Easy

The Guardian System utilizes the MCT-360 Coat Weight Transmitter to measure water based coatings. The water in the coating absorbs at 1.94 microns and allows easy measurement of the coating applied to paper, nonwovens, film, foil, metal, and other substrates. The Guardian System traverses the web on an automatic scanner providing zone averages, web average measurement, and roll reports. Measurements are available in lbs./ream, GSM, mils, and other engineering parameters. Please contact us at 508.473-9901 to discuss your application today.

Steam Re-Moisturizer Control to Reduce Edge Curl & Improve Web Flatness with Guardian Cross Direction Web Moisture Profile

Steam Re-moisturizers are increasingly used to reduce edge curl and consist of a series of steam chambers across the web. These chambers typically range from four to eight inches in width and can be single or double sided depending on the application.

Upgrading your steam foil/box to automatic control speeds startup, reduces scrap, and improves Quality Control. When considering an upgrade, a few points need to be considered to maximize value. The best data to be used from the web profile is the raw data instead of the moisture profiles zone averages as they may not match up to the steam re-moisturizer zone chambers when web widths change.

The raw data needs to be parsed to match up to the chamber zones and this means that the profiler must recognize varying web widths via a recipe. The parsed data is then sent to a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) to control each steam zone?s individual actuator valve. Instead of having operators manually enter this recipe data individually into the profiler when product widths change, it?s preferred to have the HMI (Human Machine Interface) Operator Station communicate to the profiler via Wonderware, Modbus, or other suitable protocol. This reduces the number of operator tasks and speeds product change over.

The Guardian Cross Direction Web Moisture Profile Data should also be stored separately for data archiving, typically through a separate Ethernet link.
