Hot Melt Measurement with Near Infrared (NIR) Transmitter

Hot Melt Cross Direction Web Profile

Hot Melt Measurement Transmitter

Hot Melt Measurements are typically measured with Near Infrared (NIR) transmitters that provide a digital display in engineering units, analog outputs and a digital interface.  The NIR non-contacting Hot Melt measurement is extremely accurate and stable with no regulatory requirements.  The measurement can be fixed point or scan across the web to provide a cross direction web profile.

Paraffin Wax is largely accepted as the first hot melt coating application. Polymer and copolymer resins brought a host of formulations for improved performance properties that continue to expand the horizons of Hot Melt applications. Typical Hot Melt chemistry is designed to provide strength and flexibility, tackiness for bonding and speed of set in relatively even proportions.

Hot Melt Composition Contributions

Roll Coaters, Die Coaters, extruders, and doctor blade configurations are among the methods of applying hot melt adhesive. Roll coaters offer more flexibility than die application methods as they change over more quickly and allow for stripe coating. Die Coaters offer more precision across the web, especially in the 15 to 20 GSM. Hot melt applications of 100 GSM are very common and therange can go from 0-400 GSM.

Melt coating dies vary from 100mm to 3m, depending on the application. The greater the number of dies, the greater the control across the substrate web to achieve set point. When dies malfunction or get contaminated, they need to be detected, maintained or replaced.

The Guardian CD Web Profile System provides a Cross Direction web profile on a 19” flat panel LCD in an economical and attractive enclosure. The Guardian is fully automated with recipes for web width, scan speed, zone average, and data logging digital outputs. This is a complete system to provide the highest value performance to cost ratio. The system can supply CD Web Profiles and MD Trends for hot melt thickness, moisture and temperature. Multiple measurements can be mounted on a single screen.

ICE Europe Ends In Munich – ICE USA Starts April 9th in Orlando!

ICE Europe

Customers gather to discuss new applications.

ICE Europe was a successful Exposition in Munich and ICE USA in  Orlando is generating plenty of excitement.  Munich offered an opportunity to meet customers and make new friends just as we hope to in Orlando.  Process Sensors Europe has expanded with the opening of an office in Germany to better serve our customers.  We introduced our new 3D profile imaging to Europe in Munich and will be doing the same for the USA in Orlando.

ICE Orlando will feature many of our OEM re-sellers and many of our customers have made appointments to meet with us at our booth.  We hope to see you there April 9-11.  Rumour has it that Mickey might visit too!

Tape Thickness Gauge

Film Moisture Analyzer

MCT360 Can Measure Both Moisture and Thickness

Near Infrared (NIR) Transmitters are commonly used to measure tape thickness and moisture.  Moisture control is important to avoid clouding of the film and thickness is important to maintain product consistency.  The NIR transmitter is equipped with two sets of filters.  One filter set measures the hydrocarbon peak at 2.34 micons and the second set measures the moisture at 1.94 microns.  The two tape measurements are output via proportional 4-20 mA analog signals.  Click Here To View Our MCT360 Brochure.

Paper Converting Moisture Transmitters

NIR distance to web

NIR Moisture Transmitter Should Be Between 6 and 16″ From Web.

Paper converters need to control moisture to maintain flatness and eliminate edge curl.  If the top and bottom of a paper sheet are at different moisture levels, the sides expand or contract when equilibrated causing curl.  The most common paper converting moisture transmitters are Near Infrared (NIR) reflectance analyzers.  The transmitter is mounted between 6 and 16 inches from the paper web and angled off the normal for glossy applications.  These transmitters compare absorbance at 1.94 micons where water absorbs to non-absorbing wavelengths such as 1.82 microns to provide a signal proportional to paper moisture content that is scaled to per cent moisture.  Moisture measurement is critical in paper converting.   When mounted on an automatic scanning frame, the moisture transmitter will provide a cross direction web profile.  Click Here to view our Guardian CD Web Profile brochure.
