MCT360 Hot Melt Thickness Transmitter Provides Valuable Tool for Process Control

Hot Melt Measurements are typically measured with Near Infrared (NIR) transmitters that provide a digital display in engineering units (GSM, mils, microns, lbs./ream or other), analog outputs and a digital interface.  The NIR non-contacting Hot Melt measurement is extremely accurate and stable with no regulatory requirements.  The measurement can be fixed point or scan across the web to provide a cross direction web profile.

Paraffin Wax is largely accepted as the first hot melt coating application. Polymer and copolymer resins brought a host of formulations for improved performance properties that continue to expand the horizons of Hot Melt applications.  Roll Coaters, Die Coaters, extruders, and doctor blade configurations are among the methods of applying hot melt adhesive. Roll coaters offer more flexibility than die application methods as they change over more quickly and allow for stripe coating. Die Coaters offer more precision across the web, especially in the 15 to 20 GSM. Hot melt applications of 100 GSM are very common and the range can go from 0-400 GSM.

Melt coating dies vary from 100mm to 3m, depending on the application. The greater the number of dies, the greater the control across the substrate web to achieve set point. When dies malfunction or get contaminated, they need to be detected, maintained or replaced.

The Guardian CD Web Profile System provides a Cross Direction web profile on a 19” flat panel LCD in an economical and attractive enclosure. The Guardian is fully automated with recipes for web width, scan speed, zone average, and data logging digital outputs. This is a complete system to provide the highest value performance to cost ratio. The system can supply CD Web Profiles and MD Trends for hot melt thickness, moisture and temperature. Multiple measurements can be mounted on a single screen.

The wood and biomass fuel pellet market has exploded over the last few years and the MCT360WP Moisture Gauge helps optimize the process.  The high cost and large variance in fossil fuel prices due to political upheaval coupled with their impact on the environment has driven the development and refining of the fuel pellet manufacturing market.  Fuel pellets are easy to handle and burn much more efficiently than wood logs due to their lower moisture content.  The pellets also produce more heat and less ash (1-2%) and smoke than wood logs.  Wood pellets have a calorific value of approximately 17.5 MJ/kg  vs. 10.9 MJ/kg for non-pelleted, non-dried wood and reduce the overall carbon footprint of energy by 75% or more when compared to coal.  Wood and Biomass fuel pellets can also be manufactured from waste wood, trees, straw and other renewable resources.

Many larger mills receive tree logs from local forests of uniform quality to keep transportation costs low.  The log moisture ranges from 25-55%.  They also receive waste wood and sawdust from sawmills, OSB plants and wood scrap from other sources.  Saw dust and shavings can have moisture as low as 5-12%.  These materials are delivered by truck or rail car and stacked in large separate mounds outside the mill.  Moisture impacts pellet quality, energy consumption and transportation costs.  The proper blending of these varying moisture materials is critical to efficiently produce high quality product.  The MCT360 moisture gauge supplies a large digital display, analog and digital outputs for control.

The wood pellet manufacturing process includes size reduction, drying, mixing/conditioning, pellet manufacture, and removing fines prior to packaging.

Ethanol Plant Distiller’s Grain

Ethanol plants process corn and other agricultural products to produce ethanol and use the distiller’s grain by product to generate high performance feed supplement.  The process includes an evaporator and usually two rotary dryers.  The use of two rotary dryers in series allows for a portion of the dryer exit distiller’s grain to be recycled prior to the next unit operation according to the control scheme.  It also allows for the addition of Condensed Distiller’s Solubles (CDS) to the product mix.  The Fuel Ethanol & Workshop Expo features the MCT360 Moisture Transmitter  (Booth #335)  June 10-13 St. Louis, Mo.  The MCT360 measures moisture and oil in distiller’s grain.

Moisture and product temperature at the raw material inlet (60-65% moisture, 35-40% solids), dryer 1 exit (25-35% moisture, 65-75% solids) and dryer 2 exit (10-13% moisture, 87-90% solids) offer the best data to optimize process control.  Near Infrared (NIR) moisture transmitters and Infrared (IR) Temperature thermometers and sensors allow these parameters to be measured, input into a PLC for control and archived for batch results.  Please contact us to discuss your application at 508.473-9901.

PSTC Summit offered an excellent opportunity to discuss new technologies, formulations and applications in the Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Tape Market.  Process Sensors MCT360 NIR moisture and coat weight transmitter was on display and the Guardian Cross Direction Web Profile System generated much excitement for its performance to cost ratio in the marketplace.

New Orleans’ French Quarter has expanded and cleaned up quite a bit.  Wouldn’t be surprised to find a Disney store on Bourbon Street in a couple of years.  Great music and fun happy people stroll up and down the street!  Greetings from PSTC!
