Made Tough? Built Tough? Salt or Hazardous Environments? MCT460-SS. Performance and Reliability.

The MCT460-SS Nova Series of Near Infrared (NIR) Analyzers offer unparalleled performance/price ratios in all applications.  Hazardous and challenging environments that others stay away from are routine for us.  While some recommend high air purges, we recommend a 3-5 psig across the window in rough situations.  Anything higher causes a turbulent air flow forcing particles onto the measurement lens and blocking signal and impacting signal/noise and accurate readings.  Others sometimes want a high flow, quick demo and exit.  We’re there to make your installation a success.

Charlie Kent Beloved Friend and PSC Co-Worker Passes

Charlie Kent

We are all deeply saddened at the terrible loss of our beloved friend and co-worker Charlie Kent. Charlie passed away at his home on Saturday January 4th, 2014. Charlie worked for PSC for over 13 years. He loved taking Lola (company mascot) for walks, playing his guitar, gaming on his computer and collecting and building military models. Charlie was a very loved family member and an important part of our team here at PSC. We will miss you Charlie.  Attached are the directions to the Funeral home below.

Funeral services will be held on Tues., Jan. 7 at 7:00 pm in Jackman Funeral Home, 7 Mechanic St., Douglas. Calling hours at the funeral home are Tues., Jan. 7 from 4-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Charlie’s memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675 or To leave a condolence message for the family, please visit: - See more at:

Near Infrared Measurements – How Do They Work?

Light Spectrum

Light Spectrum

Near Infrared (NIR) measurements are based on specific absorption bands in the electromagnetic spectrum between 800 and 2500 nanometers (nm).   While full spectrum analyzers may utilize the entire spectrum and multivariate mathematical treatments such as Principal Component Regression (PCR), Partial Least Squares (PLS) or neural networks, photometers use “slices” of the spectrum that correspond to specific molecular overtones and associated vibrational absorptions.

Photometers utilize narrow band pass interference filters that have a specified band width typically 50 nm wide, though the band width is sometimes application dependent.  The NIR has broad bands as opposed to the sharp peaks in the Infrared region.  Common bonds are O-H (1940 and 1420 nm) in water, C-H (2340 nm) in organics and oils and N-H in proteins.  The absorbance level at these specific wavelengths is proportional to the quantity of the constituent to be measured.

Shining light at these wavelengths causes the corresponding chemical bond to vibrate and absorb energy.  Think of different sections of a stadium crowd called upon to shout and jump when their section is highlighted on the stadium Jumbotron.

Photometers compare near infrared energies at measure and reference wavelengths and are typically calibrated with a simple linear regression analysis though non-linear algorithms can be employed for specialized applications or for wide dynamic ranges.  Photometers are easy to install and maintain and they are used in process, at-line and in the laboratory for rapid product analysis.  Typical applications are found in the food, pharmaceutical, tobacco, converting, chemical, mineral and wood processing industries.

Chromate Conversion Coatings CCCs on Metal

CCCs are frequently applied to steel coil and aluminium coil surfaces to render them corrosive resistant and to establish an adhesive base for organic coatings.  Chromium VI, hexavalent chromium has been the most predominantly used form, but it’s usage is being curtailed through RoSH legislation owing to it’s toxicity. Chromium III is safe to use, and is still being used by many aluminium manufacturers in addition to newer alternatives based upon phosphates, manganates, silanes, etc

As NIR measurement is non contact and non destructive, the  MCT 360 can be simply installed on line after the coating has been applied to measure the coat weight on a continuous basis, enabling automatic or manual adjustment to the coater. Control of coat weight is important as it impacts the physical and chemical properties of the sheet metal.  The CCCs also “tie” the paint to the metal substrate to reduce or eliminate paint peel issues.  This measurement is similar to other converting applications.

The gauge is installed parallel to and at a distance of 150 – 300mm from the metal sheet as it passes over a large diameter steel roller, or approaches rollers (for minimal web flutter).  Measurement is made on the wet coat weight but the read-out is in terms of dry coat weight.  The solids ratio must be kept constant or be known, so that a correction factor can be applied to the measurement read-out.

Dry coatweight range Expected measurement accuracy
*3-8 mg m-2  +/- 0.05 mg m-2

* Note other coat weight ranges can be measured.
