Process Sensors Corporation to showcase their NIR moisture and coat weight measurement solutions at ICE USA 2017

ORLANDO, FL, (April 18, 2017)– Process Sensors Corporation (PSC), a KPM Analytics company, will showcase its Near Infrared (NIR) moisture and coat weight measurement solutions that optimize start-up, reduce costs and increase quality control in converting at ICE USA 2017 in Orlando, FL April 25-27, Booth # 941.

With decades of application expertise helping customers solve their most challenging converting application problems, Process Sensors will be highlighting the Guardian Cross Direction Web Profile System, with new features in data logging and archiving.

The Guardian System provides a complete web profile to detect edge moisture and coat weight issues, automatically detecting web edges and lanes across the web improving web quality control versus single or multiple static NIR transmitters. The Guardian System can also identify out-of-spec product in jumbo rolls based on time and length position.

For process optimization, the Guardian System can measure coatings on the wet or dry end, or it can also be employed to measure dryer exit moisture and the re-moisturizing operation, providing ultimate flexibility. All systems feature analog outputs and digital communications such as Ethernet, Ethernet IP, OPC Kepware, Modbus, and DeviceNet, plus alarm alerts that can be logged and mapped for jumbo rolls.

The Guardian System also provides alerts in the case of plugged dies or specks on rollers, reducing costs and optimizing production time. For production lines with manual start-up procedures, the Guardian System dynamically measures results of manual operation adjustments or provides input to closed loop control. By eliminating repetitive cycles of sampling, awaiting lab test results and manual operation adjustments until run specifications are met, start-up times are decreased by more than 20%.

PSC will also be demonstrating the MCT460 Transmitter for static moisture and coat weight measurement, and the QuikCheck laboratory and at-line analyzer. The QuikCheck offers the ability to cut out a sample and test on the spot, providing quick sample measurement for immediate results in the lab or at the line.

SnaxPo Monday Go Pro Winners Puff in Savannah!

Monday’s “Guess the Moisture” SnaxPo contest for Cheese Puffs resulted in “Klein” of a tie when the puffs moisture was revealed at 3:30 p.m. to be 1.95%.  Guesses ranged from 0.8 to 3.6% moisture.

The MCT466-QuikCheck measures moisture and oil/fat levels in seconds and is routinely used on potato chips, tortilla chips, extruded snacks, popcorn and other snack foods.

Used for quality control applications in snack food processing, the solutions can monitor and improve product quality, help maintain brand integrity, archive data, and reduce costs.

 

With decades of application expertise in food quality and safety, Process Sensors Corporation will be highlighting their MCT466 Snack Food Stainless Steel Process NIR Analyzer suitable for wash down environments, and the QuikCheck Laboratory and At-Line Analyzer for moisture and oil/fat measurements with the new USB feature and network communications interface. Moisture content impacts product texture and shelf life, and oil/fat can impact flavor and calories. The MCT466 Process Analyzer and the QuikCheck Analyzer allows food manufacturers to monitor and control both, ultimately influencing brand integrity and customer loyalty. Shawn Smith joined the Process Sensors Corporation Team in February 2017, and will be managing current and prospective moisture, oil/fat and coating analyzer application projects in the US Southwest territory and Mexico. Shawn resides in Decatur, TX with his wife, Kristal and young son, Jet.

Prior to joining Process Sensors Shawn spent 5 years with Enertechnix, Inc. as a sales engineer, where he worked on infrared image processing projects in industrial applications throughout the world. Prior to Enertechnix, Inc. Shawn held support positions with The Hill-Rom Company. Shawn also served in the U. S. Army Military Police Corps for 5 years.  Shawn graduated from the University of North Texas, Denton with a BS in Public Administration.

PFAS Coating Measurement Is Important In Food Packaging

PFASs are polyfluoroalkyl chemicals commonly used in food packaging due to their resistance to oil, grease, moisture and stain resistance.  They are applied to everything from fast food burger/sandwich wrappers to pizza boxes in food packaging.  PFASs are also used on fabrics such as carpets, furniture and backpacks for stain resistance.

Essentially hydrogen atoms are replaced with fluorine atoms terminating with a Carbon chain.  The PFASs are similar to Teflon (PTFE) used in non-stick frying pans.  The danger with PFASs in food packaging is that if too much of this grease resistant coating is applied in food packaging, it can migrate into the food that we ingest and potentially increase cancer risks.

Therefore, it’s critical that food packaging suppliers measure and control the amount of PFASs applied to their paper and board lines.  Near Infrared Cross Direction Profile Systems provide this measurement that can be sent to a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) to precisely control the amount of PFAS being applied and they can also archive data.

Moisture Barrier Coating Consumption in Food Packaging Manufacturing

Moisture barrier coatings are used to prevent moisture migration and preserve quality and shelf life of food products.

Many moisture barrier coatings are relatively thin in the order of 0.5 lbs/ream (per 3000 Ft²) or less.  These coatings can easily be measured with Near Infrared Transmitters on printed substrates to optimize the coating thickness and insure a uniform Cross Direction Web Profile.  Measurement data can be archived in roll reports that are time and date stamped for future reference in the event of customer complaints or other issues.  These reports can also be used to compare the performance of different shifts on production runs.

Coatings and adhesive need to be applied in sufficient amount to meet specifications.  Without a method to measure the deposition, many manufacturers apply more coating than needed resulting in a higher production cost.  Too little applied coating will not provide the needed barrier to prevent the migration of moisture that can result in spoilage and an adverse impact on taste, texture and shelf life.

Stopping the line to collect lab samples slows production and does not supply archiving capabilities for roll or production runs.  On-line continuous measurement of coating speeds start up, increases production and in-specification product.

The wet water based coated substrate typically passes through a dryer and then a re-moisturizer where a separate moisture measurement system supplies the output to control the moisture profile and minimize or eliminate lay flat and edge curl issues.

Plant managers are often concerned about coating consumption which impacts the profit margin on specific orders.  Coating calculations determine the amount needed for a specific product run and the cost of coating associated with that product run.  For instance, if a 40 inch wide web with a target of 1 wet lb per 1000 ft squared and an anilox volume of 14 BCM is being manufactured, both the weight in pounds and volume in gallons can be calculated.  If the web width for another version of the same product is increased to 80 inches, the consumption significantly increases but it is not a simple doubling of necessary coating as that is a function of increased area not simply web width.

Near Infrared technology employed on-line can calculate the continuous consumption to aid in monitoring the production run or roll consumption when incorporating other parameters.
